History of York Stone
Paving York stones are available in a kit or pack for paving a particular area, cut to the right size. This saves a lot of time and hassle. By buying a kit of paving York stones, the risk of running out of right sized stones, mid-way through the job is less. The ideal time to plan the paving of a driveway or patio is autumn. At this time, the weather is still pleasant but the plants have not started growing, at a very rapid pace.
Grange York stone is one of the riven finished York stone. Riven refers to the splitting of solid blocks of York stone to leave the surface of the stone looking natural. York stone rivens are usually available in random shapes and sizes, due the splitting process. They are further cut and gauged to the required size and shape. The standard size of a York stone flagstone is 40mm- 60mm in thickness. However they can be split to any desired thickness, due to the rivening process that follows. They can also be ordered in different shapes like paving circles or European fan patterns.
York stone has other useful features, which are less well known. For example, it can be used as a very effective abrasive material. In old times a York stone hand turned wheel was used to sharpen the knives and other instruments. York stone with water was a very effective way, to sharpen the carpentry and masonry instruments like chisel etc. York stone was the only material available to do the same. York stone was also used to blacken and finish the lead letterings, on the headstones. A block of York stone was rubbed over lead letterings along with water to finish the lead letterings that had been hammered.
York stone is perhaps the only natural stone that has been used for centuries for myriad purposes and continues to be as popular in the recent times. It has been used for varied purposes in the construction business and has proved time and again, how effective a material it can be.
